'Interstice - Monochrome I' by Colorado Contemporary Abstract Artist, Susan M. Gibbons

"Interstice - Monochrome I"
Encaustic on Cradled Board
36" x 36"
$2800

This work is the first in the series of Monochrome Paintings.  Incorporating the idea of Interstice: the space in-between, the work exemplifies the interaction of edges, space and contrast.  The integration and disintegration of the edges, the rhythm and movement, and separation and division of the picture plane allows for the awareness of opposites: the play of black and white.  The interstices present the rhythms of life, passages of time, and a place of being.

This work is based on the book of Genesis when God's Hand creates Adam from the earth.  The moment of the stirring of the creative act is symbolized in these paintings using encaustic (bees wax, damar resin, and pigment) and dirt.  The colors reflect the basic colors of the human skin.
The variety and exquisiteness of the myriad hues of the human skin reflect the breath and imagination of the Creator.  Created in the image of God, the beauty of these colors characterize the beauty of the various tones of the people of the world.
