“Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist…"
Rene Magritte

I love this quote from Rene Magritte for it encompasses the essence of art - it's mystery and how appropriate it is for us as humans.  Human beings intrinsically create.  We must, it is a part of our nature, from the greatest works of art to the advances of science and medicine.  We create.  We've discovered macro and micro worlds on this planet and in space.  And within it all, we, on this earth, among the vastness of space and the wonders of our world, discovered that the universe contains the such immense mysteries, things we can and cannot explain. Mysteries that go beyond our initial comprehension.  Our existence, coupled with such wonders leads us to create, to express such things.

Art in itself, expresses the human condition.  One of its roles, expresses what it means to be human.  It leaves a record of our existence and the meaning (or meaninglessness) of it.  Who we are would not be fully understood without our art.  As Magritte stated, "... the world would not exist...".  What we know of and as our world is incomplete without our art.  Our knowledge of past civilizations to the present, would (and is) not be complete without the art that has been created.  The arts have an important role within our societies and cultures.  It helps define us, express us, and identifies us as creative beings.

How do we define mystery? How do we explain it?  Some of the attempts have left us empty.  It is a part of what makes up mystery.  It can't be explained, it can't be rationally defined for within it, contains something that goes beyond this world and our understanding of it.  Once mystery is revealed, it is experienced and trying to define it or explain it falls greatly short.

Art contains that mystery.  It goes beyond the mere recording of our society/culture/lives.  It contains what it means to be human. It contains spirit.  It is spirit to spirit communication.  When a work of art touches us deeply, we've connected with it far beyond a surface level.  A level that can't always be explained.  That's the beauty and mystery of art.  It connects us, feeds us, expresses us; it connects us: spirit, soul, and body.  We would not exist without it.  Nor should we because art contains the beauty and ugliness of this world.  It contains the truth of this world. It contains who we are.
