'Moving Over', part of the Interstice Series by Colorado Contemporary Encaustic Artist, Susan M. Gibbons

Image
'Moving Over'
Encaustic on Cradled Board
12" x 48" x 1.5"
$1000
Another painting in the Interstice Series, this work plays with the morphing of edges.  Moving from black to white, the hard and diffused edges allow the viewer to 'move over' the piece from right to left or left to right.  Utilizing the definition of interstice - the space in between - the painting allows for different perceptions; are the spaces in between black or white?  Warm and cool hues are presented within the acromatic bands once again accentuating the contrast.

'Transition'
Encaustic on Suede Matboard mounted on Cradled Board
18.5" x 49" x 1.5"
$1700
This painting is part of a larger series of works based on the concept of Interstice (the space in between).  The edges of the areas 'in between' are the focal points of the piece with them morphing and changing from black to white and white to black.  Overlays of iridescent highlight the contrasting bands giving a shimmering effect.  The suede itself plays a part in the play of the piece as it expands the paint into semi-circles.

This work is the final piece in the collaboration with Denver poet, Wayne A. 'Interstice - Monochrome VII', a Contemporary Abstract Piece by Colorado Encaustic Artist, Susan M. Gibbons

Image
Interstice - Monochrome VII
Encaustic on Cradled Board
36" x 36" x 1.5"
$2800
The last in the Interstice - Monochrome Series, this piece plays with the concept of Interstice (the space in between).  The bands of black and white accentuate the contrast between them with subtleties within the black and white.  The edges play a crucial role as the values morph into each other.  Using the medium of encaustic (bees wax with damar crystals and pigment), the medium allows for the organic feel of the planes of value as they meet each other.

'Interstice - Monochrome VI', another piece in the Series, Interstice - Monochrome by Susan M. Gibbons

Image
"Interstice - Monochrome VI"
Encaustic and Graphite on Cradled Board
36" x 36" x 1.5"
$2800

Another piece within the Series, Interstice - Monochrome, this work plays with more of a planar concept of Interstice (the space in between).  Painting with encaustic (bees wax, damar crystals, and pigment), and incorporating graphite, the textural sheen in the work and the play of the edge morphs into each other.  The contrast of values enhances each other and the diagonal adds movement to the piece.  The subtleties within the white and black areas creates an added visual interest which contrasts the boldness of values within this work.

'Interstice - Monochrome V', another Piece in the Series of Abstract Encaustic Work by Colorado Contemporary Artist, Susan M. Gibbons

Image
Interstice - Monochrome V
Encaustic on Cradled Board
36" x 36" x 1.5"
$2800
Yet another piece in the series of Interstice - Monochrome works.  One of the definitions of Interstice means, 'the space in between' which is the inspiration for this work.  The piece has a minimal approach to the idea with just one band of black within the color field of white.  The subtleties within the white area play against the deepness of the black area.  Also, the play of edges is an important feature within this work as the opposite values brings out the contrast between the two areas.

The fourth in the series of Interstice - Monochrome pieces, this work plays with the idea of space and contrast.  The concept of  Interstice - the space in between - allows for the experimentation of line and space all the while playing with opposites: black and white.  The morphing of the edges between the planes of paint exemplifies the movement and changes of value within the piece.

Interstice - Monochrome II
Encaustic on Cradled Board

This piece is the second in the Interstice - Monochrome Series.  Based on the idea of Interstice - the space in between, the work exemplifies the play of space, textures, contrasts, and movement.  Working with the medium of encaustic (pigmented bees wax plus damar resin), the translucency of the paint allows for the subtleties of layers and color.  Using the concept of opposites, they define each other and make each other known, thus enhancing the contrast within the painting.
